Statue of Liberty

A gift of friendship from France in 1886, the Statue of Liberty has embraced Americans for over a century. As immigrants first arrived in America, this landmark was their first sign of hope and freedom.
The symbolic statue represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom bearing a torch and a tablet inscribed with the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. She is made of pure copper and her torch is coated with 24-carat gold leaf. With the help of Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi painstakingly crafted this icon of freedom for the United States.
