Notre Dame Cathedral
The Notre Dame Cathedral is considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in the world, and one of the first buildings to use the flying buttress to support its beautiful framework. Dramatic stained glass windows, paintings, sculptures, organs and architectural elements contribute to the beauty and history of Notre Dame. Construction on Notre Dame began in 1163 and was completed in 1345, as evidenced by the variety of architectural elements. There are five bells, namely the great bourbon bell, Emmanuel, which marks the hours of the day and other occasions. Three organs grace the interior of Notre Dame Cathedral, including the Great Organ, which was constructed in the 12th Century and stands in the forefront of a beautiful stained glass window.
