Located at the highest point in Paris, the summit of Montmarte, rests the Sacre-Coeur Basilica, a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the “Sacred Heart” of Jesus. The architect, Paul Abadie introduced the beautiful Romano Byzantine architecture of Sacre-Coeur; but unfortunately, he died before the basilica was completed in 1914. Constructed completely out of travertine stone, Sacre-Coeur remains white, despite years of weathering and pollution.
The basilica incorporates one of the largest mosaics, entitled Christ in Majesty, in the apse, in addition to many beautiful sculptures, bronzes, and paintings throughout. The top of the Sacre-Coeur’s prominent center dome is open to visitors, providing one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the city of Paris and the town of Montmarte below.
