The Sorbonne and the Latin Quarter

Founded in the mid 12th Century, the University of Paris was one of the earliest institutions to be established in Europe. After many changes, the University, often referred to as the Sorbonne, ceased to exist in 1970, and 13 independent universities (University of Paris I-XIII) were created from it. The first 4 of these institutions have a presence in the historical Sorbonne building and include Sorbonne in their names.
The Sorbonne is an edifice of the Latin Quarter, the historical house of the former University of Paris. The Latin Quarter is home to a number of higher education establishments, besides the University itself, and is known for its student life, lively atmosphere and bistros. Its name is derived from the Latin language, once widely spoken in and around the University, as the international language of learning in the Middle Ages.
