Almudena Cathedral
Named for Madrid’s patron Saint, Virgin Almudena, the construction of the Almudena Cathedral began in 1883. Unfortunately, war, political and design changes prevented completion until 1993, when it was consecrated by Pope John Paul II.
Constructed entirely of granite and marble, the Cathedral has a neo-classical exterior, a gothic revival interior, and a Neo-romanesque crypt. Visitors can go to a rooftop terrace for a magnificent view of the city below.
