Reina Sofia Museum
A modern-art extravaganza, the Reina Sofía Museum in Paseo del Arte is home to Picasso's world-renowned Guernica, as well as works by Dalí, Miró and Juan Gris. The museum grew substantially with the opening of Jean Nouvel's extension in 2005.
Spanish artists are showcased alongside other European artists from across the board from Surrealism to Pop Art. The works are divided in various ways: chronologically, showcasing works by the best Spanish artists and some international 20th-century artists; thematically, according to different artistic movements; value, picking out the cream and singularity of certain artists in particular movements; and temporary exhibitions, with a wide range of works by renowned artists from around the world, from the 20th century to the present. The permanent collection was opened in 1992 by King Juan Carlos of Spain and his wife Queen Sofía. Until then, it had only housed temporary exhibitions.
