Berlin, Germany Attractions
Berlin’s Museum Island, Museumsinsel, was designed in 1841 to be “a sanctuary of art and science”. Sadly, nearly 70 percent of the buildings were destroyed during World War II, and after the war, the collections were split between East and West Berlin. A reconstructionprogram at the end of the 20th century restored the five museums on Museum Island including:the Old National Gallery, Old Museum, Bode Museum, Neues Museum, and the Pergamon Museum.
The Old National Gallery owns one of the largest collections of 19th century sculpture and paintings in Germany. The Old Museum houses ancient Greek and Roman artifacts. The Bode Museum includes a large collection of sculptures, paintings and numismatic collections. The NeuesMusuem includes prehistoric, early history and Egyptian works of Art, including the bust of Queen Nefertiti. The Pergamon Museum includes a collection of Greek and Babylonian antiquities, including the enormous PergamonAltar.
