St. George’s Castle
Visible from nearly everywhere within the city of Lisbon, St. George’s Castle served as a Moorish royal residence until Portugal’s first king captured and dedicated it to St. George, the patron saint of England.
Most of the castle was destroyed over the years, primarily in the Great Earthquake, but a long extension of walls and 18 towers still exist, many dating back to the 6th century. Visitors can climb the towers for breathtaking views of the city, or relax in the castle gardens.
