Presenting a one of a kind collection of a historic art form, the Tile Museum traces the art, history and production of decorative ceramic tiles, or azulejos. The museum containstiles from as early as the 15 century in addition to displays of how they are made.
The Tile Museum is a bit off the beaten track in the monastic buildings of the Madre de Deus Convent. Its chapel and chapter house have some of the most magnificent interiors with stunning paintings and panels adorning its walls and ceilings. The highlight of the museum is a 75 foot long blue and white composition created in 1738 which is comprised of 1,300 tiles representing Lisbon’s cityscape.
