Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute
The Basilica, simply referred to as Salute, was proposed by the Venetian Senate in response to an epidemic of the plague, which had killed about a third of the city’s population. In the 17th century, the Senate agreed to build the church in honor of Mary if she would free the city from the disease.
This beautiful octagonal-shaped church sits on a platform of 100,000 wooden piles and is constructed of Istrian stone and a marble dust covered brick called marmorino. The Salute is one of the most photographed structures in Venice.
