Longhua Temple
Initially built in 242 AD during the Three Kingdoms Period, the Longhua Pagoda (Longhua Ta) was said to be one of thirteen temples to be built to house the created remains of the Buddha. The temple was destroyed and rebuilt during the Song Dynasty in 1064, and is considered Shanghai’s largest and most active temple.
Longhua is famous for its Bell Tower, with a 3.3 ton bronze bell, cast in 1894 which is struck 108 times to dispel all the worries said to be afflicting mankind. For a minimal fee, visitors can strike the bell, but only three times.
