The Bund
The Bund, translated “embankment”, refers to the famous waterfront running along the west shore of the Huangpu River in Shanghai. Once a gateway where foreign powers entered the city and the center of a thriving commercial and financial center, the Bund was a symbol of a prosperous time, leaving an indelible mark on Shanghai’s cityscape.
In preparation for the 2010 World Expo, the government spent 5 billion Yen renovating the Bund, re-establishing it into its former glory. Beautifully restored colonial-era buildings line the banks of the Huangpu River, in addition to a newly widened and lengthened promenade. Enjoy the Bund at night when the buildings are all aglow.
