Yu Yuan
Built between 1559 and 1577, the Yu Yuan, or “Garden of Peace and Comfort” is a 5 acre classical Chinese garden in the heart of Shanghai’s Old Town (Nanshi). The Yu Yuan contains several gardens-within-gardens, including a maze of 30 Ming Dynasty pavilions, elaborate rockeries, arched bridges, and goldfish ponds, all encircled by an undulating dragon wall.
Some highlights of the garden include the Yu Ling Long (Exquisite Jade Rock) containing the most celebrated stone structure in the garden and the Nei Yuan, or Inner Garden, the quietest section of the garden that leads to the exit from Yu Yuan into Shanghai’s Old Town and Huxingting Teahouse.
