Great Wall of China

Considered one of the greatest sights in the world, the Great Wall of China was built primarily to protect the Chinese Empire from northern invaders. The Wall began construction in the 5th century BC when China was divided into many small states, and continued through the beginning of the Qing Dynasty in 1644.
The Great Wall is an awe-inspiring feat of ancient defensive architecture, winding over rugged country and steep mountainsides. Before the use of bricks, the Great Wall was built from packed earth, stones and wood. Later, stronger materials such as tiles, lime, stone and bricks were used, increasing productivity and durability. Portions of the Great Wall have been extensively renovated, while others have eroded over time.
