Temple of Heaven
Nearly four times larger the size of the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven is the grandest religious architecture complex in the world, and a masterpiece of the Chinese people. The Temple was built in 1420 during the Ming Dynasty and enlarged during the Qing Dynasty. Emperors from both dynasties used to worship heaven and pray for rich harvests, thinking they were the sons of heaven.
The Temple of Heaven has two parts, an inner and outer temple, surrounded by two elaborately constructed walls and filled with symbolism. The two primary buildings in the Temple are the Altar of Prayer for Good Harvests and Circular Mount Altar connected to one another by the Imperial Walkway Bridge. Several subsidiary buildings and gardens complete the vast grounds of the Temple of Heaven.
