The Forbidden City
Also known as the Palace Museum, the Forbidden City was built as the imperial residence for the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The large palace complex has 70 structures withmore than 9,000 rooms, and is spread across 250 acres. A 33-foot high wall surrounds the Forbidden City with elaborate watchtowers, encircled by a moat.
The Palace was turned into a museum in the early 20th century, and houses an extensive collection of fine treasures. The museum’s official entrance at Tiananmen Gate leads into a beautiful royal garden.Visiting the Forbidden City in the evening, particularly in the summer months, is spectacular with the Palace buildings illuminated by colored lights.
