Tiananmen Square

Tiananmen Square is located in the heart of Beijing City and named after the Tiananmen Gate, or Gate of Heavenly Peace, separating it from the Forbidden City. Tiananmen Square has been the site for several important events in Chinese history, most notably the pro-democracy protests of 1989.
Built in 1651, Tiananmen Square has been enlarged four times its original size to be the largest square of its kind in the world. Visitors can climb the Tiananmen Rostrum, attend the national flag raising ceremony every morning at sunrise, visit the National Museum of China, and go to the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong.
