Munich, Germany Attractions
St. Mary’s Square is in the heart of the city of Munich where important public events have taken place since the Middle Ages. The large column of St. Mary stands in the center of the square, celebrating the end of the Swedish invasion.
The square’s New Town Hall stands 259 feet tall, and was completed in 1909 to alleviate overcrowding in the Old Town Hall nearby. At 11, 12, and 17 o’clock each day, visitors can watch the famous Gockenspielwith clock figures performing the cooper’s dance, or Schafferitanz, which was originally performed in 1517 to celebrate the end of the plague.
