4711 House

In the Middle Ages, it was common for houses to be named rather than numbered. In 1794, French troops occupied Cologne and ordered that all houses by assigned a unique number. The house which currently stands at Glockengasse nr 4 was assigned the number 4711, and remains the headquarters of Mulhens, the famous perfume company, with its company perfume designatedEau de Cologne 4711.
Today, the ground floor of 4711 House is home to a store selling the famous fragrance and a museum tracing the history of the Eau de Cologne 4711.
