Hahnentorburg
Many medieval era gates that surrounded the city of Cologne have been beautifully preserved and restored. The most impressive of these gates is the Hahnentorburg, constructed in the 13th century. The wall surrounded the city in a semi-circle and bordered the Rhine River, and included an impressive 12 gates.
The most important of the gates that gave entrance to Cologne was known as the Hahnentor which was built between 1235 and 1240, and included two stately towers. The Hahnentorburg has had many functions throughout its lifespan, including a prison, museum, and an exposition hall.
