Rathaus
Built in the 14th century, Cologne’s City Hall is located in the heart of the city’s old town. The 200 foot high Ratsturm (city hall tower) symbolized a change made to the balance of power in Cologne’s government. The Gothic tower was decorated with sculptures of important figures in the history of Cologne. The tower was rebuilt after being destroyed in World War II, and includes 124 statues depicting Christ, his apostles, saints, and figures important to cologne’s history.
The Rathauslaube, or loggia, was added to the central City Hall complex in the 15th century, and incorporates beautiful medallions, reliefs and sculptures. The oldest hall in the Rathaus, or Hansasaal, was built in the 13th century and was located behind the loggia as a meeting place for merchants.
