Frankfurt Opera
An architectural and cultural symbol of Frankfurt, the Opera House staged its first performances in 1880. Designed by Berlin architect Richard Lucae, the building was heavily damaged during World War II. Restoration and reconstruction efforts were launched in 1953, and the opera house reopened in 1981 with a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 8, the "Symphony of a Thousand". Today, the “Alte Opera” has three separate halls which stage concerts and plays along with hosting small gatherings. Frankfurt’s operatic productions are now most often staged in a “new” opera house which opened in 1951.
