Staedel Museum
The holdings of the Staedel, one of Germany’s leading art museums, are staggering: 100,000 drawings and prints, 600 sculptures and 100,000 books. Visitors to the Staedel can experience works from artists such as van Eyck, Bosch, Degas and Vermeer, with collections representing Late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The Staedel was founded in 1878. During World War II, many of its pieces were removed for safekeeping. The damaged structure was reopened in 1966. The Staedel continues to acquire new pieces and to expand its galleries, with new spaces for the display of contemporary work.
