The Goethe House

The birthplace of writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1749, this structure dates back to the early seventeenth century. Located at 23 Grosser Hirschgraben, the home was originally two buildings which Goethe’s father fused into a single structure. Destroyed by Allied bombing raids in 1944, Goethe House was restored in the late forties and early fifties. Today, it is a window into the past, and offers visitors a firsthand look of what life was like for a well to do Frankfurt family in the 1700s.
