Gion

Kyoto’s historic Gion district is one of Japan’s leading Geisha districts, although the geisha here are known as Geiko. Rich in traditional architecture and traditional performances, Gion is home to the city’s annual Cherry Blossom Dances and Dances of the Old Capitol. These take place in the spring during Sakura season. Gion is a small area on the eastern bank of the Kamo-Gawa. Most buildings are made of wood and its streets are narrow. Gion is best explored during early evening hours, and most visitors are drawn to the southern side of the district, home to most of the seventeenth century teahouses and restaurants. Throughout Gion are galleries, shops, and antique dealers.
