Kyoto National Museum
Located by the Sanjusangendo Temple, the Kyoto National Museum has been undergoing restoration and is scheduled to reopen in 2013. One of the great four Japanese National Museums, the Kyoto National Museum has extensive holdings of works from the Meiji period, an era when the emperor regained imperial powers, and Japan’s capitol moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. The Museum first opened in the spring of 1897. Its collections, which largely focus on pre-modern Japanese works, are housed in a number of buildings, and include fine arts, pottery, fabrics and metalwork.
