Sanjusangen-do
One thousand and one golden statues of the goddess Kannon, who had a thousand arms. These are some of the national treasures housed in Kyoto’s Sanjusangendo Hall. The longest wooden building in Japan, built in 1249 and reconstructed following a fire in 1266, Sanjusangen-do was once the site of ceremonial archery competition. Today, the building serves as a gallery, displaying a variety of Buddhist statues representing deities which protect the Buddhist universe. Located in Kyoto’s Higashiyama District, the “Hall of the Lotus King” is part of the Myoho-in Temple and the Tendai School of Buddhism.
