Leipzig, Germany Attractions
Situated at the east end of the center of Leipzig, the Augustusplatz is the largest square in the city. It serves as the heart of public transit, and its name pays tribute to Frederick Augustus, the first King of Saxony. The character of the Augustusplatz has been constantly changing, with many of the once elegant structures surrounding the square either destroyed in World War II bombing raids or torn down by the former East German government. Today, noteworthy buildings ringing the square include the Opera House, a futuristic parking garage, and the main buildings of the University of Leipzig.
