BMW Plant Leipzig

When BMW decided to create a new billion and a half dollar complex in Leipzig to manufacture its series 3 vehicles, it hosted an international design competition. 25 international architects took part, and the winning design was awarded to Zaha Hadid, an Iraqi-British architect. The structure unifies three existing facilities, where more than 650 series 3 vehicles pass along elevated conveyor belts every day. This parade of cars passes by offices and conference rooms, and gives visitors a close up look at the different stages of the results of the assembly process. 5,500 people are employed at the BMW facilities in Leipzig, which have received a number of architectural awards.
