Leipzig, Germany Attractions
The Mendelssohn House in Leipzig offers a wealth of information and attractions for people with an interest in the composer. Born in Hamburg and raised in Berlin, in 1845 Mendelssohn and his family moved into an apartment on the structure’s first floor. Best known as a composer, during his lifetime Mendelssohn was also a conductor, a pianist and an organist. Today, this apartment reflects the appearance of the period, decorated in the Biedermeier style. The building itself is of the late classical period. Its museum contains collections of musical scores, letters and documents, along with pieces from Mendelssohn’s personal collections of art and furniture. In the music room, performances are often staged.
