Old Stock Exchange
A statue of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who studied in Leipzig from 1765 to 1768, stands in front of the city’s Old Stock Exchange, or Alte Handelsbörse. Two exterior staircases lead to the entrance of the baroque building, which opened for trading in 1687. Designed by Johann Georg, this small but distinctive structure served as the vital hub of commerce for Saxony. Destroyed during World War II, the building was restored and reopened in 1962. Today, the building hosts events, lectures, and concerts.
