Opera House

The third oldest opera in Europe, the Leipzig Opera now performs in a facility which opened in 1960 with a performance of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Because the opera does not have its own orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra performs, as it has since 1766. The acclaimed company stages both classical and contemporary operatic productions. The “Neues Opernhaus” also includes a small theater, the Kellertheater, where audiences see small experimental and ensemble performances.
