Thomas Kirche and Bach Museum

Best known as the resting place for the remains of Johann Sebastian Bach, who worked at the church as cantor, Thomaskirche offers a rich history. Martin Luther gave a sermon in the church in 1539, and today, the church is a member of the Lutheran denomination. Built in the late Gothic style, Thomaskirche was threatened by air pollution from nearby coal mines following World War II, and was placed on a Monuments Watch by the World Monuments Fund. Restorations have been made, and the “Church of Bach” now celebrates its musical heritage with two organs, one specially designed and built to replicate an antique organ on which Bach performed. In the bell tower are four different bells, the oldest cast in 1477.
