Volkerschlachclenkmal

The Völkerschlachtdenkmal, The Monument to the Battle of the Nations, is the biggest monument in Europe, and commemorates the Battle of Leipzig in the Napoleonic Wars. Fought over three days in the fall of 1813, an army made up of soldiers representing Russia, Prussia and Austria, fought Napoleon’s army, which included Italian and German forces. More than 600,000 soldiers took part in the battle, which forced Napoleon to retreat to France. Today, the Völkerschlachtdenkmal pays tribute to the 100,000 men who died in Leipzig. Visitors may climb steep steps to the monument’s observation deck to survey the former battlefields.
