Mexico City Attractions

Officially called the Plaza de la Constitucion, the square is in the heart of the city. Because Mexico City was the capital of New Spain, its zocalo is one of the largest, grandest public plazas in the world, graced on all sides by 17th century buildings.
A grand monument to Mexico’s independence was planned for the square, but was never completed. A “zocalo” or pedestal became the landmark for visitors and soon the square became commonly known as “Zocalo”, even after the pedestal was removed.
