Hundertwasserhaus

In 1983, an Austrian artist/architect named FreidensreichHundertwasser converted a complex of public housing units into an unusually colorful structure comprised of irregular patterns and varied window shapes. Though not accepted at first, the Hundertwasserhausbuilding attracted many people to the otherwise quiet neighborhood.
To reduce pedestrian traffic to the neighborhood, Hundertwasser was commissioned to design a shopping arcade opposing the Hundertwasserhaus so that visitors could view the unique style of this non-traditional artform. Several other buildings in Vienna have received the “Hundertwasser treatment” and are popular to visit.
