Hamburg, Germany Attractions

Designed by architect Fritz Höger and built between 1922 and 1924, the Chilehaus was constructed with more than four and a half million bricks. The ten-story office building is situated on Fischertwiete Street in Hamburg and is considered one of the most stunning examples of 1920s Brick Expressionism architecture. The top of the building, set at an angle, suggests the prow of a ship. Construction required unusually deep pilings and a sealed cellar because of the moist terrain. The name of the building comes from the original owner’s business ties to Chile. Today, visitors to Hamburg enjoy the most striking views of the Chilehaus from the east side of the city.
