Hamburg, Germany Attractions

Church St. Michaelis

With room for 2,500 parishioners to worship at its services, St. Michaelis is the largest church in Hamburg. Its baroque tower, which is sheathed in copper, is a distinctive piece of the city’s skyline, and has served as the landfall mark for ships along the River Elbe. The present structure was first constructed in the late eighteenth century. It has been restored twice, once following a devastating fire in 1906 and again following Allied bombing raids of World War II. The clock face at St. Michaelis, more than seventy feet in circumference, is the largest in Germany.
