Town Hall
The Hamburg Town Hall, or the Rathaus, a building larger than London’s Buckingham Palace, was under construction for more than forty years after fire destroyed the previous building. Located in the city’s Aldstadt Quarter, the Town Hall serves as Hamburg’s seat of government. In 1945, the Commander in Chief of the German Army formally surrendered to the British Army inside the Town Hall. Numerous heads of state have visited the building. Today, visitors to Hamburg who tour the Town Hall can see the lobby where exhibitions are staged and concerts are held, but most of the 647 rooms of the building are for official business.
