Former Site of Whampoa Military Academy
Founded in 1924 by Sun Yat-Sen, a leader of the Xinhai Revolution and one of the fathers of modern China, the Whampoa Military Academy is home to exhibits, military records, and a statue of Sun Yat-Sen. The complex, situated on Changzhou Island, was destroyed in fighting against the Japanese in the 1930s and ‘40s. Restored in 1964, the Whampoa Military Academy trained a number of Chinese leaders, including Chiang Kai-shek and Zhou Enlai. As a symbol of the cultivation of leadership for a new China, the influence of the site is significant. The facility was in operation for only four years, and operations moved to Nanjing in 1928.
