Guangzhou, China Attractions
Shamian Island is a historic district which captures the flavors of the colonial European era. Separated from the mainland by a canal and adjacent to the Pearl River, the Shamian is a neighborhood of tree-lined streets. It has historically been the home to foreigners living in Guangzhou, a tradition which continues today, as couples who travel to China to adopt babies often chose to stay there during the process. In the nineteenth century, Shamian was occupied by both Great Britain and France. Western style stone mansions with distinctive Chinese architectural influences were built along the waterfront by businessmen from the United States and Europe. Today, these former residences serve as government offices or apartment buildings.
