Nanjing, China Attractions

Dr. Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum

Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum, the most popular attraction for visitors to Nanjing, is situated on a slope at the foot of Purple Mountain. The father of modern China was buried in the mausoleum in 1929, four years after his death. Pine, cypress and ginkgo trees line the stairway to the vault. A gate which leads into the vault is inscribed with the words of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, “What is under heaven is for all.” Along with an expansive square and the vault is a sacrificial hall, located south of the actual vault. The sacrificial hall houses a statue of Dr. Sun carved from white Italian marble. From the ceiling hangs the flag of Kuomintang.
