Drum Tower
When the Drum Tower in Nanjing was built in the fifteenth century, it served as a hub of communications. Drums were used to warn of attacks, to signal the changing of the guard, and to announce the arrival of the emperor. The tower, also known as Gulou, is situated in the heart of Nanjing where it is now surrounded by a traffic circle. Stone stairways lead to a pavilion and behind this pavilion is the tower. Years ago, it housed dozens of drums. Today, most of them are gone, but visitors can enjoy a good view from each of the four sides of the two-storey tower, and relax in the Drum Tower teahouse.
