Memorial Hall to Victims in the Nanjing Massacre
The massacre itself took place in 1937. After the Imperial Japanese Army captured Nanjing, then the capitol of China, as many as 300,000 residents of the city were slaughtered. In 1985, the memorial, located in the Jiangdongmen district near a site where thousands of bodies were buried, was dedicated. The complex was expanded in 1995. It features outdoor exhibits, sheltered skeletal remains of victims, and an exhibition hall where historic documents are on display. One of the highlights of the outdoor exhibit is a wall where many of the names of the massacre’s victims have been engraved.
