Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge

It was not until 1968 that a bridge crossed the Yangtze River in Nanjing. The river here is wide and the bridge, which can take fifteen minutes to drive across, is more than 22,000 feet long. Along with engineering prowess and construction skill, much national pride went into the construction of the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge. Much of the rest of the world doubted China’s ability to take on such a project without outside assistance. Today, the double deck, double lane highway and railway bridge connects the city to the west bank, where a new master-planned community is being developed.
