Purple Mountain

Located south of Nanjing, Purple Mountain, also known as Bell Mountain, is the home of more than 200 historic and scenic sites. Three of these are Chinese national historic sites. The mountain is a rich and complex ecosystem with 628 plant species identified. Visitors to Purple Mountain can reach the summit, where there is an observatory, by taking an aerial tramway. Purple Mountain is best enjoyed by hiking, and a number of trails, many of which are not mapped, cut across the terrain, which can be heavily forested. The area is also home to a dozen national research institute and university facilities.
