Stuttgart, Germany Attractions

Hauptbahnhof

The mail railway station in Stuttgart, the Hauptbahnhof is located at the northern end of the Königstrasse, the main shopping street and pedestrian zone in the heart of the city. The building’s twelve story tower is a Stuttgart landmark, and displays an illuminated, rotating Mercedes-Benz logo. The Hauptbanhof was built in two phases between 1914 and 1928. Its exterior is sheathed in limestone and brick, and the interior is a combination of sandstone and brick. Because of its progressive design elements, the Hauptbanhof is regarded as one of the region’s architectural achievements. To minimize damage to the building during World War II, the Germans constructed a fake Hauptbanhof to try and fool allied bombers, a ruse which was partially successful. Today, the station is a cultural monument.
