Stuttgart, Germany Attractions
Named after the German poet and philosopher Friedrich Schiller, the Schillerplatz lies to the south of Stuttgart’s main square, the Schlossplatz. The cobblestone square is ringed by historic buildings including the Stiftskirche, the Fruchtkasten building, the Prinzenbau, the Alte Kanzlei, and the Altes Schloss. Beneath the square, which was first laid out in 1594, is an underground parking garage. Public markets take place twice a week, along with seasonal events such as a Christmas Fair. The statue at the center of the Schillerplatz honors Friedrich Schiller. The area was severely damaged by Allied bombing during World War II, and the historic restorations have been extensive.
