Wilhelma Zoo and Botanic Garden

The Wilhelma in Stuttgart, the only zoological and botanical garden in Europe, was originally built as a royal palace for Baden’s King Wilhelm I in the mid nineteenth century. With 8,000 different animals and 5,000 species of exotic plants, the Wilhelma’s holdings are extensive. Structures which simulate different ecological zones and climates house an aquarium, a crocodile house, an ape exhibit, an aviary, and an insect exhibit. Thousands of exotic plants are on display in biospheres and greenhouses. Playgrounds and cafeterias are available. The Wilhelma is adjacent to a public park which reflects the classic British style of rolling lawns and clusters of trees.
